Elfen Lied

Elfen Lied revolves around the interactions, views, emotions, and discrimination between humans and the Diclonius, a mutant species similar to humans in build but distinguishable by two cat-ear-like horns and “vectors”, transparent arms which can pass through air and objects at high speed. The series is centered around the teenage Diclonius girl “Lucy”, said to be the first Diclonius, being rejected by humans and her subsequent murderous vengeance upon them.

Elfen Lied involves themes of social alienation, identity, animal cruelty, revenge, child abuse, jealousy and the value of humanity. The series employs graphic violence and nudity, especially the graphic opening sequence of the first episode.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion is an apocalyptic mecha action series which centers around the efforts by the paramilitary organization Nerv to fight monstrous beings called Angels, primarily using giant mecha called Evangelions which are piloted by select teenagers, one of whom is the primary protagonist.

The story begins with a flashforward to the Tour de France, where Mikoto Shinozaki would become the first Japanese champion.

Time before this, and while feeling a deep crush on Yuki Fukazawa, Mikoto then decides to get into his high school cycling club as Fukuzawa’s suggestion, even though he has never practiced any sport before. Ironically, the club’s leader is Yousuke, Fukuzawa’s older brother and a renowned road racer from his town. Yousuke’s long time cycling partner and club’s vice president Kouichi Terao sees in Shinozaki all the potential and courage necessary to become a road cycling legend.

Over drive is the story of how Mikoto Shinozaki becomes interested in cycling and all the ups and downs he must live to get his dream of becoming Tour de France’s champion come true.

Hellsing

Hellsing centers around the Holy Order of Protestant Knights, led by the latest member of the bloodline of Abraham Van Helsing. Their mission is to protect Queen and Country from the undead and other supernatural forces of evil. The organization is run by Sir Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, who inherited her responsibility as its director after the death of her father in her early teenage years. She is served by her faithful family butler and former Hellsing “trashman,” Walter C. Dornez, and Alucard, a powerful vampire that was captured by the family a hundred years ago and serves as the organization’s current “trashman.” They are later joined by former police officer Seras Victoria, who becomes a Hellsing soldier when she is turned into a vampire by Alucard.

Death Note

Death Note centers on Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook, the titular “Death Note”, dropped on Earth by a shinigami (death god) named Ryuk. The Death Note grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose face they have seen, by writing the victim’s name in the notebook. The story follows Light’s attempt to create and rule a world cleansed of evil using the notebook, and the complex conflict between him and his opponents.

Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop follows the adventures of a group of bounty hunters traveling on their spaceship, the Bebop, in the year 2071. It is considered one of the best anime series ever made.

Mushi-Shi

The story features ubiquitous creatures called Mushi that often display supernatural powers. Mushi are described as beings in touch with the essence of life, far more basic and pure than normal living things. Due to their ephemeral nature most humans are incapable of perceiving Mushi and are oblivious to their existence, but there are a few who possess the ability to see and interact with Mushi. The Mushi depicted in the anime look very similar to floaters.

Trigun

Known for its Space Western theme, Trigun is about a man named “Vash the Stampede” and the two Bernardelli Insurance Society employees who follow him around in order to minimize the damages inevitably caused by his appearance. Most of the damage attributed to Vash is actually caused by bounty hunters in pursuit of the sixty billion “double dollars” bounty on Vash’s head for the destruction of the city of July. However, he cannot remember the incident clearly due to his amnesia. Throughout his travels, Vash tries to save lives using non-lethal force. He is occasionally joined by a priest, Nicholas D. Wolfwood, who, like Vash, is a superb gunfighter.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Set in a fictional universe in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques known to man, the story follows the brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who want to restore their bodies after a disastrous failed attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy.

Naruto: Shippuuden

Naruto: Shippuden is the ongoing sequel to the original Naruto anime and covers the Naruto manga from volume twenty-eight on. After training for two and a half years with Jiraiya, Naruto returns to Konohagakure, reunites with the friends he left behind, and reforms Team 7, now called Team Kakashi, with Sai replacing Sasuke. All of Naruto’s classmates have matured and improved in the ranks, some more than others. Unlike the original series where they only played a minor role, the Akatsuki organization takes on the main antagonistic role in their attempts at world domination.
